Elders urge thorough and open process irrespective of gender or region

In an opinion piece in the New York Times, Four Ideas for a stronger UN, Kofi Annan and Gro Harlem Brundtland, on behalf of the group of global leaders called the Elders, urge an immediate overhaul of the selection process. The Elders, in their statement, call for an open search, for the Security Council to recommend more than one candidate to the General Assembly to choose from, for a single term of seven years and oppose promises by candidates in return for support, thus echoing specific measures promoted in the 1 for 7 Billion Campaign.
