On 26 January, 1 for 8 Billion briefed UK Parliamentarians on the upcoming Secretary-General selection process at a meeting of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on the United Nations.
Jane Kinninmont, CEO of UNA-UK, highlighted the significance of the appointment at a time when multilateralism is under threat. She stressed the need for a strong Secretary-General who can act as a compelling global figurehead: an effective communicator able to connect with younger generations, articulate the UN’s relevance today, and defend a rules-based international system.
1 for 8 Billion’s Ben Donaldson briefed attendees on the increased transparency achieved by the 1 for 7 Billion campaign during the 2015–16 selection process. He outlined the advocacy priorities of the relaunched campaign, including the call for increased civil society participation, more open and inclusive discussions, a more active role for the General Assembly, and the continued call for the appointment of a feminist woman Secretary-General. Sara Pantuliano, Chief Executive at ODI Global, spoke about the role of the Security-General, including their vital role in appointing the other senior UN leaders and the global network of peace envoys.
Parliamentarians were also briefed by 1 for 8 Billion on the timeline for the upcoming process and engaged in discussion about the requirements and role of the Secretary-General at a critical moment for the future of the UN. It was encouraging to see interest and enthusiasm among UK parliamentarians to pursue action on this agenda in both houses, and a willingness to explore how the UK can support a transparent selection process.
