Following the establishment of our new Steering Committee the 1 for 8 Billion campaign is now mobilising civil society ahead of the next Secretary-General selection process, due to start in late 2025.
In 2015-16 we built a coalition of 750 organisations from all corners of the world. This level of mobilisation helped us achieve our campaign aims leading to a transformed process to select the UN’s leader. To be successful we had to start campaigning early, building a coalition ahead of the official selection process to advocate for a fair, open, inclusive process.
While 1 for 8 Billion has made significant gains, much unfinished business remains. The process is still dominated by the Security Council. There has never been a woman Secretary-General. Promises of top UN jobs are extracted from candidates by powerful states. Civil society deserve a much bigger say in the appointment and in the UN generally.

Sign our Woman SG letter to diplomats
We are building civil society support behind a letter which will be sent to all UN ambassadors ahead of High Level Week in September. The letter asks for all member states to only consider the nomination of woman candidates.
Ask your national government to endorse our principles
1 for 8 Billion has released a set of principles to be used as a benchmark against which a fair, open, inclusive process should be measures. Send a copy of these to your national ministry of foreign affairs, asking them to endorse them.
