Gamba withdraws from SG race

On 25 March, the Maldives withdrew its nomination of Virginia Gamba as a candidate for UN Secretary-General. The Maldives had nominated Gamba just two weeks earlier on 12 March. This move ends Gamba’s candidacy, as all candidates for Secretary-General must have the support of at least one UN member state.

Gamba is an Argentinian national and previously served as Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict.

There are currently four candidates seeking to be appointed the next UN Secretary-General: Michelle Bachelet of Chile, Rafael Grossi of Argentina, Rebeca Grynspan of Costa Rica, and Macky Sall of Senegal. Read more about the candidates here.
